I came upon this Lucian Freud, After Cezanne, and loved that Freud left out that corner of the painting. I liked that part even better when I saw the Cezanne that this painting is an homage to. The frame moulding that juts into Freud’s painting mimics the alcove moulding in the Cezanne painting.
According to the NGA’s website:
He initially had a large rectangular canvas, but added a small section to accommodate the upper half of the maid servant’s figure.
Other than this little bit and the overall composition, these two paintings don’t have much else in common, but it’s always nice to see an artist’s inspiration.
